Washing and Toning Hair Extensions using MUVO
24 JulAs a hairdresser, it’s essential to provide your clients with the best care for their hair extensions and for us as professionals to stay updated with the latest techniques and best practices. In this blog, we’ll focus on two vital aspects of hairdressing – cleaning hair extensions and toning them with MUVO toning shampoos. Proper care and maintenance of hair extensions, as well as mastering the art of toning will elevate your skills and leave your clients feeling confident and satisfied with their gorgeous, luscious locks.
Whether your clients have tape-ins, clip-ins, or sew-ins, this guide will help to enhance the extensions’ longevity and maintain their vibrant colours!
I wear tape extensions in my own hair and love how easily I can tone my extensions between professional colour appointments with MUVO toning shampoos. I like to mix it up by alternating MUVO Totally Naked Shampoo (colour free shampoo) with a MUVO coloured shampoo to avoid over toning.
Before diving into the cleaning process, it’s crucial to know the type of hair extensions your client has. Common types include tape-ins, clip-ins, fusion, and sew-ins. Different extensions have varying care requirements, so make sure you’re familiar with the specific type you’re working with.
How to Clean & Tone Hair Extensions with MUVO
Before starting the cleaning process, make sure you have the necessary tools and products at hand. You will need:

Begin by gently combing through the hair extensions with a wide-toothed comb or a specialised hair extension brush. Start from the ends, working your way up towards the roots. Be patient and avoid pulling or tugging, as this can damage the extensions.
Avoid using hot water as it can weaken the bonds or adhesive holding the extensions. Make sure the water level is not too high to prevent tangling.
To clean extensions, you’ll need to submerge them in the water and gently agitate them to ensure that the shampoo reaches all parts of the hair. Repeat submerging the hair extensions in the water as needed. Avoid rubbing or twisting the hair excessively, as this may cause tangling. Rinse the extensions thoroughly with lukewarm water.
If your client desires a tonal adjustment or wants to maintain a specific shade for their installed extensions, a coloured shampoo or toning shampoo can work wonders. Choose a MUVO product that matches their desired tone or complements their existing colour (check out this blog for a handy guide on choosing the correct MUVO toning shampoo for your client). Apply the MUVO coloured shampoo to the extensions, working it through the hair gently. Leave it on for 1-5 minutes, and then rinse thoroughly. Repeat this process for more extreme toning or if a deeper colour is desired.
Always conduct a strand test to ensure the shampoo will achieve the desired outcome without over-toning the hair. In the case of over-toning extensions, I recommend applying MUVO Deep Cleansing Shampoo to remove the toner without affecting the original base colour. Make sure that if you’re using tape extensions, avoid washing the adhesive with a clarifying shampoo such as Deep Cleansing Shampoo as it could dissolve the glue.
This process is suitable for pre-cleansing and toning extensions before application on a client, or for working with a client who already has extensions installed. It’s also a good idea to teach your clients with clip-in extensions and halo hair pieces the above routines so that they know how to best care for their extensions. This will make your life easier when they come into the salon for their next service.

How to Apply Conditioner to Extensions
Apply a small amount of MUVO Totally Naked Conditioner or specialised toning conditioner in the MUVO range to the extensions, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. Leave the conditioner on for a few minutes to allow it to penetrate the hair shaft. Rinse the extensions thoroughly to remove any residue.
TOP TIP: Be careful not to apply too much near the roots or extension fixtures to avoid extensions slipping out of the hair.
Drying and Styling Extensions
Gently squeeze out excess water from the extensions, being careful not to rub or wring them. Pat them dry with a clean towel and avoid using excessive heat or harsh towel drying. Allow the extensions to air dry or use a blow dryer on a low heat setting if necessary. Remember to use a heat protectant spray if heat styling is required. My favourite is the MUVO Revolution Leave-In Treatment.
TOP TIP: If you’re washing hair extensions before applying them to a client, allow the extensions to air dry completely before styling or storing them.
As a skilled hairdresser, mastering the art of cleaning and toning hair extensions with coloured shampoo is crucial to provide an exceptional service to your clients. MUVO Hair products allow you to tailor your approach to each client’s unique needs. By following these tips, you’ll not only achieve stunning results but also ensure the longevity and health of your clients’ hair extensions.
Happy Hairstyling!
